Shopify powers over 4 million online stores worldwide, but its built-in payment options still do not include a straightforward way to accept cryptocurrency. If you want to offer Bitcoin, USDC, Ethereum, or other crypto payments to your Shopify customers, you need a third-party integration. The good news: in 2026, adding crypto checkout to Shopify is easier than ever.

This guide walks you through the complete process of adding crypto payments to your Shopify store using GroundedPay. No coding experience required. The whole setup takes under 10 minutes.

Why Add Crypto Payments to Your Shopify Store?

Before we get into the how, here is why it is worth doing:

Reach customers who prefer crypto. A growing segment of online shoppers actively look for stores that accept crypto. These tend to be higher-value customers with larger average order sizes. Across GroundedPay's merchant base, we see crypto checkout adoption rates around 15%, well above the industry average.

Zero chargebacks. Every crypto transaction is final. There is no dispute process, no chargeback fees, and no risk of friendly fraud. For Shopify merchants who deal with chargeback headaches, this alone can justify the integration. Learn more about how crypto eliminates chargebacks.

Lower effective fees. Shopify Payments charges 2.4% to 2.9% per transaction (plus 30 cents). Third-party processors charge even more plus a 2% Shopify surcharge. GroundedPay uses flat monthly pricing, which means your per-transaction cost drops as your volume grows.

No risk of payment processor issues. If you sell products in categories that traditional processors consider risky -- supplements, CBD, certain digital goods -- crypto gives you a payment channel that cannot be shut down by a third party.

What You Will Need

Before you start, make sure you have:

  • A Shopify store on any plan (Basic, Shopify, Advanced, or Plus)
  • A crypto wallet address -- specifically an Ethereum (ERC-20) address for receiving USDC, USDT, and ETH. If you also want to accept Bitcoin, you will need a BTC wallet or xpub key.
  • A GroundedPay account -- free to create at groundedpay.com/signup

Do not have a crypto wallet yet? We recommend MetaMask for Ethereum-based payments (it is a free browser extension) or Coinbase Wallet for a mobile-friendly option. For Bitcoin, BlueWallet or Electrum are solid choices.

Step 1: Create Your GroundedPay Account

Head to groundedpay.com/signup and create your account. You will need an email address and a password. There is no application process, no underwriting, and no waiting period. Your account is active immediately.

Step 2: Connect Your Wallet

In your GroundedPay dashboard, navigate to Settings and enter your wallet addresses:

  • Ethereum address -- for receiving USDC, USDT, ETH, and other ERC-20 tokens. This is the 0x... address from your wallet.
  • Bitcoin xpub key (optional) -- for receiving BTC payments. Using an xpub generates unique addresses per transaction for better privacy and accounting.

Because GroundedPay is non-custodial, payments go directly from your customers to these wallet addresses. We never hold your funds.

Step 3: Connect Your Shopify Store

In your GroundedPay dashboard, go to Integrations and select Shopify. Enter your Shopify store URL (e.g., your-store.myshopify.com). GroundedPay will walk you through the OAuth connection process, which grants the necessary permissions to create payment sessions on your store.

Alternatively, for a lightweight integration without OAuth, you can add GroundedPay's checkout widget directly. Go to your Shopify admin, navigate to Online Store > Themes > Edit code, and add the following script tag to your theme's layout/theme.liquid file, just before the closing </body> tag:

<script
  src="https://groundedpay.com/embed-shopify.js"
  data-merchant-id="YOUR_MERCHANT_ID"
  async>
</script>

Replace YOUR_MERCHANT_ID with the merchant ID from your GroundedPay dashboard. This script adds a "Pay with Crypto" button to your Shopify checkout automatically.

Step 4: Configure Your Accepted Currencies

In your GroundedPay dashboard, you can configure which cryptocurrencies you want to accept:

  • USDC -- the most popular option. It is a dollar-pegged stablecoin, so you receive exactly $1 of value for every $1 your customer pays. No price volatility.
  • USDT -- another dollar-pegged stablecoin, widely used internationally.
  • ETH -- Ethereum's native currency. Price fluctuates, but some customers prefer it.
  • BTC -- Bitcoin. Requires a separate BTC wallet address or xpub key.

For most Shopify merchants, we recommend starting with USDC and USDT. These stablecoins eliminate price volatility concerns -- you receive the exact dollar amount of the sale, settled in a stable digital dollar.

Step 5: Customize Your Checkout Widget

GroundedPay's checkout widget matches your store's branding. In your dashboard, you can customize:

  • Brand color -- matches the button and accent colors to your store theme
  • Button text -- default is "Pay with Crypto," but you can change it to "Pay with USDC," "Pay with Bitcoin," or whatever fits your audience
  • Logo -- your store logo appears in the checkout modal

Step 6: Test a Transaction

Before going live, do a test transaction. Place an order on your store and choose the crypto payment option. The checkout widget will display a payment address and QR code. Send a small amount of the selected cryptocurrency to confirm everything works end-to-end.

GroundedPay's dashboard shows real-time transaction status: pending, confirming (waiting for blockchain confirmations), and confirmed. Once confirmed, the Shopify order is automatically marked as paid.

Step 7: Go Live

That is it. Your Shopify store is now accepting crypto payments. Customers will see a "Pay with Crypto" option during checkout, alongside your existing payment methods. When they choose it, they see a modal with the payment amount, a wallet address, and a QR code they can scan with any crypto wallet app.

Tips for Maximizing Crypto Checkout Adoption

Adding the payment option is step one. Here is how to get more customers actually using it:

Mention it on your product pages. Add a line like "We accept USDC, Bitcoin, and ETH" near your Add to Cart button. Customers cannot use what they do not know about.

Consider a crypto discount. A 2-3% discount for paying with crypto costs you less than card processing fees and encourages adoption. Some of our merchants offer 5% off and still come out ahead.

Add a "How to Pay with Crypto" page. A simple FAQ page explaining the process removes friction for first-time crypto payers. Link to popular wallet apps and keep the instructions short.

Feature it in your marketing. Mention crypto payments in your email newsletters, social media, and product descriptions. The crypto-paying audience actively seeks out stores that accept it.
